By-Elections AY20/21 Sem 2

As per Article VII, Section 5 of the Student Government Constitution, by-elections are to be held at the start of semester 2 for any vacant positions or positions that were appointed in the Executive and Senate. On 21 Jan 2021, the AY20/21 By-Election Committee was convened. The committee members are: Steven Justin Sy, Chitvan Bansal, Matthew Ling, Larissa Lee, and Kristen Oliveiro.

What is the By-Election Committee?

The By-Election Committee is an independent body separate from Student Government that is in charge of holding the by-election process as outlined by Article VII, Section 2. They typically comprise of four impartial arbiters from the student body (chosen from a pool of applicants) and two outgoing Government members acting as committee conveners. By-Election Committee members are barred from running for elections and have the ultimate authority on all election matters.

Update #4: Fri 5 Feb 2021

The By-Election Committee announced the results:

Elections reached quorum (15%) for all positions. The total number of votes was 177 for the Executive positions and 106 for Class of 2024 Representative.

For each position, the candidate(s) meeting the quota get the position (highlighted in bold).

SENATE ELECTIONS

There were no candidates for Class of 2022 Representative.

For Class of 2024 Representative, quota was 36 votes.
· Joleen Teo: 83 votes
Dylan Loke: 18 votes
No Vote: 5 votes

After redistributing Joleen Teo’s excess votes in accordance with STV procedures,
· Dylan Loke: 47 votes
· No Vote: 16 votes

Thus, Joleen Teo will be elected as Class of 2024 Representative with Dylan Loke as Deputy Class Representative.

EXECUTIVE POSITIONS

For all of these positions, quota was 90 votes.

For Vice President of Student Life,
· Joshua Tee: 138 votes
· No Vote: 38 votes

For Director of Athletics,
· Chua Ying Shuen Kelly: 146 votes
· No Vote: 28 votes

For Director of Enterprise,
· Denyse Tan Jia Wei: 156 votes
· No Vote: 19 votes

For Director of Finance,
· Maaz Syed: 144 votes
· No Vote: 31 votes

There were no candidates for Director of Events.

The By-Election Committee thanked everyone who voted in the By-Elections and the candidates and nominees. They also specially thanked Education Technology staff, who helped in setting up the Canvas page.

Update #3: Tue 02 Feb 2021

The By-Election Committee announced that voting has begun and students can vote until Thu 04 Feb 2359hrs. They advise anyone who encounter any difficulties to message any of the By-Elections Committee members or to send an email to yncelection@gmail.com.

The By-Election Committee announced the confirmed candidates for each position:

The positions of Class of 2022 Representative and Director of Events therefore have no candidates. The committee also shared that the campaigning period is Fri 29 Jan to Sun 31 Jan 2021, with a cooling off day on Mon 1 Feb where no candidates can put up any new campaign material. Voting by students will commence from Tue 2 Feb to Thu 4 Feb 2021.

Update #1: Mon 25 Jan 2021

The By-Election Committee released the nomination form for the by-elections. Students are welcome to nominate themselves or others for the available positions (see below). The nomination deadline is Wed 27 Jan 2021, 2359hrs. The committee also shared that the deadline to accept nominations is Thu 28 Jan 2021, 2359hrs, and confirmed nominees may campaign from Fri 29 Jan to Sun 31 Jan 2021. Available Positions

Vice President of Student Life

The Vice President of Student Life supervises the Director of Academics, Director of Wellness and Residential Life, and Director of Diversity and Inclusion. Their primary role is to advocate for student interests relating to the three broad areas, and to promote the academic, interpersonal, and mental wellbeing of students.

Past Vice Presidents have led their team of Directors to tackle the issues of housing deficits and counselling unavailability and work on the topics of dining re-contracting and campus culture. In addition, a past Vice President spearheaded the advocacy effort for a S/U policy during COVID-19 (AY19/20 Sem 2).

This position is up for election because it was not filled from the previous AY19/20 election, and an Acting Vice President was appointed in AY20/21 Sem 1.

Director of Enterprise

The Director of Enterprise conducts outreach efforts with external parties, neighbouring residential colleges, and student governments from other universities such as NUSSU, NTUSU and SMUSA.

Past Directors have planned and executed the annual Summer Storage and Happy Days (welfare event). In addition, a past Director launched the StuGov Instagram page, started the Next Door Neighbour initiative with neighbouring residential colleges (Yale-NUS x NUS lunch tag), and worked on Kingfisher Treats (UTown discounts for Yale-NUS students).

This position is up for election because it was not filled from the previous AY19/20 election, and an Acting Director was appointed in AY20/21 Sem 1.

Director of Athletics

The Director of Athletics takes on the mammoth role of project director for the annual Inter-College Games and Inter-Faculty Games, liaising with residential colleges and faculties from NUS, and coordinating the logistics and manpower for the sports events delegated to Yale-NUS.

Past Directors have organised the annual Inter-College Games and Inter-Faculty Games.

This position is up for election because it was not filled from the previous AY19/20 election, and an Acting Director was appointed in AY20/21 Sem 1.

Director of Finance

The Director of Finance manages the StuGov budget and allocates funds for individual directors and representatives in StuGov.

A past Director collaborated with vendors in UTown to secure discounts for Yale-NUS students (Kingfisher Treats). They successfully negotiated for discounts with Sapore Italian Restaurant and SuperSnacks.

This position is up for election because it was vacated at the start of AY20/21 Sem 2.

Director of Events

The Director of Events primarily organises College-wide and inter-residential college events such as the annual Halloween horror house, as well as Town Halls that promote engagement between students and key staff members as well as clarification of policies.

Past Directors organised numerous Town Halls, the annual Halloween horror house, as well as multiple College-wide events such as a board game night and art jam night.

This position is up for election because it was vacated at the start of AY20/21 Sem 2.

Class Representatives

Class Representatives serve as the primary liaison between their class and the Senate and also organise class-wide events. Class Representatives are able to raise up issues affecting their class, advocate for students interests, and advocate for policy changes, by coordinating with other members of the Senate and the relevant Directors from the Executive. As part of the Senate, they are empowered to introduce and vote on resolutions and bills, which may entail directing the Executive to act or amending the constitution.

Class of 2022 Representative

This position is up for election because it was not filled from the previous AY20/21 Sem 1 election, and an Acting Representative was subsequently appointed.
